Livorno: "Presso Gio. Tomaso Masi e Comp.", 1777. Folio (239 x 240mm). Engraved allegorical frontispiece by F. Gregori after Carlo Coltellini, engraved vignette on the title, 43 etched plates comprising maps, city plans and views by Vremondo Rossi, Andrea Scacciati, Giuseppe Terreni, Violante Vannie and others, of which 24 double-page (some staining and browning at the centrefolds of the double-page plates, the plates mounted on hinges throughout, with some staining to the hinges, 2 large holes, without loss, at the upper margin of the view of Quebec, a few holes mainly at gutters with occasional very slight loss, variable but mainly light and marginal spotting and staining throughout, a few darker spots and stains). Contemporary full vellum (some wormholes to the upper portion of the spine, staining to lower board, extremities rubbed, inner hinges weak). Provenance: "Comprata a [?]Ragusa li 20 Novembre 1814 per me Antonio [?]Mart ... [?]Glavan" (inscription at the foot of the title); old inscription or signatures crudely defaced on either side of the title illustration; old illegible upside-down signature or inscription on the verso of one plate; later pencil numbering of the plates, accidentally skipping number 7, but corrected to match the list from plate 13 to plate 30, where the pencil numbering stops. Plate counts vary for this work, with some citations calling for 44 (possibly including the frontispiece): our copy, with 43, conforms exactly to the printed list at the front which is numbered from I - XLIII, not including the frontispiece. The plates were originally published in Il Gazettiere Americano (Livorno, 1763), the first Italian translation of The American Gazetteer. Among the subjects are the Niagara Falls, New York, Boston harbour, Quebec, New Mexico and the islands of Cuba, Santo Domingo, Jamaica and Barbados.
