Original paper wrappers over boards illustrated by JESSIE M. KING (the upper wrapper darkened, a few tears and creases, the backstrip rather worn, some fraying). ASSOCIATION COPY, inscribed on the front free endpaper, "J. M. Barrie from his friend W. B. M. Ballantyne, Xmas 1912", and further SIGNED BY J. M. BARRIE. We have been unable to establish for certain the identity of the writer of the presentation inscription but it seems likely to have been one of the six children of the Scottish novelist R. M. Ballantyne (1825-94). In 1913, Barrie wrote an introduction to an edition of Ballantyne's Coral Island, and is known to have been a close friend of the author.
