Images of the French Emperor Napoleon I were widely disseminated through the 19th Century, even after his removal from power, as his legacy experienced various resurgences in popularity. Chaudet carved the original in marble, depicting Napoleon in the guise of a Roman Ceasar on a herm base with plain tapering shoulders, finishing the piece in 1804, with many examples issued in marble from 1807 and 1809.
