Circa 1900

Estimate: £400 - £600
Hammer price: £700
Bidding ended. Lot has been sold.

Inscribed to the base of the cast ‘M. HERAPATH 08 No.1’, mounted on a green marble base, 70.5cm high

Mervyn Herapath was both an artist and actor, the brother in-law to Linley Sambourne, whose home is kept as a museum and where another of the few works by Herapath is displayed. It is believed the statuette was created in 1907 and exhibited at the Royal Academy in 1908 with the title Don Quixote, number 1913. If this is the case, the figure could represent Don Quixote on the verge of madness and defeat, hence the possible 'damage' to the sheild.

Condition report:

The bronze has possibly sustained damage to the shield, with a jagged crack running towards the centre, but this could be in the design and manufacture of the figure. The end/tip to the sword is bent,  the handle of the sword, together with the blade of the dagger and the spur from one boot are missing.

The patina with some wear commensurate with use and age. Dirt and dust.
