PHOTOGRAPH ALBUM, INCLUDING VIEWS OF SYDNEY, HONG KONG, SINGAPORE, MANILA AND JAPAN - An album of c.176 mounted albumen silver print photographed views, [c.1880], various sizes, some mounted several to a page, including:

1) 2 photographs of SYDNEY, the first comprising an extensive panoramic view, in 4 joined photographs, of Sydney Cove taken from the grounds of Government House looking west towards The Rocks and including Fort Macquarie (demolished in 1901) complete with cannons at the battlements, the photographs taken before the construction of the ASN Co. (the Australasian Steam Navigation Company) building in 1885, several ships docked in the harbour (torn at one intersection with slight loss, lightly stained at all intersections), the panorama's overall dimensions 225 x 920mm., [c.1880]; the second a photograph of the entrance of Government House, 145 x 200mm., [c.1880];

2) 5 photographs of HONG KONG, captioned respectively in contemporary pencil, "St. John's Cathedral, Russian Consulate, City Hall, Hong Kong" (200 x 250mm.), "City Hall, Hong Kong" (built in 1869 and demolished in parts between 1933 and 1947) (190 x 250mm.), "Queen's Road, Hong Kong" (205 x 255mm.), "Peddars [sic] Wharf, The Prada [sic], Hong Kong" (a panorama, small piece torn away from lower edge, 200 x 495mm.) and "Victoria Harbour, Hong Kong" (a panorama, creased, quite severely torn but without loss, 200 x 465mm.), [c.1880];

3) 2 photographs of SINGAPORE, the first captioned in contemporary pencil, "Hotel d'Europe, St. Andrew's Cathedral, Singapore" (252 x 350mm.); the second a general panoramic view of the harbour and buildings, captioned "Singapore" (creased, short tear without loss, 268 x 670mm.), [c.1880];

and further including c.120 photographs of Japanese portraits and views, the portraits hand-tinted in colours, including views captioned in contemporary pencil, including "Temple of Kioto" [sic] (180 x 225mm.), "Temple at Kobe" (180 x 230mm.), "Shiba" (150 x 192mm.), "Temple at Yedo" [sic] (135 x 192mm.), "Yusiyama" [sic] (157 x 225mm.), "Race Course Yokohama" (135 x 190mm.), "Nagasaki" (125 x 155mm.), "Kobi [sic] after typhoon" (105 x 172mm.), "Mianoshta. Tea House where Statham and I stayed" (230 x 290mm.), and many others, [c.1880]; 2 photographs of the Sultan of Zanzibar's yacht, H. H. S. Glasgow; with views of Manila, Aden and Malaysia ("Sarawak"); and a few Sussex views (Easebourne, Midhurst, Cowdray, etc.); with several items loosely-inserted including an unsigned watercolour panoramic view of the Sussex coast with shipping, probably at Newhaven, dated in pencil on the verso 1898, with the blindstamp of "Christ's Hospital Drawing Schools".

Large oblong 4to (365 x 500mm.). Contemporary brown half morocco (heavily rubbed and scuffed). Provenance: The Property of a Lady; "Mianoshta. Tea House where Statham and I stayed" (pencil inscription beneath one of the photographs, as described above). Included in the album is a photograph of a ship's crew, one of whose members is identified as "Statham" in the pencil key beneath: the photographer was presumably a member of the same crew, although he does not identify himself in the album.
