Large 4to (385 x 280mm). 50 coloured plates by Alexandre Jacovleff, some mounted, some lithographed (small piece torn away from the margin of plate 24, not affecting image), unbound as issued in the original portfolio, with a booklet in a black silk binding with African motifs hand-painted in red and white on the upper wrapper; the whole contained in a morocco portfolio with suede ties (some staining and rubbing). NUMBER 104 of 750 COPIES, THIS COPY "POUR SIMONE VINDEVOGHEL." Included in the lot is a one-page autograph letter to a previous owner of the book, from Frank R. Bradlow, Cape Town, [undated], stating, "... I have studied your magnificent book with tremendous interest and delight. Most of the printing in the book is done by lithography. You may be interested to know that the plates that are 'tipped in' (i.e. pasted) are done by what is known as five colour letterpress - in other words by normal printing ... The other plates are done by colour lithography; probably the artist painted on to a clear acetate film which was then exposed to a zinc plate. It is an expensive method used for good work ..."
