HEALDE, Thomas ([?]1724-89).  The New Pharmacopoeia of the Royal College of Physicians of London. Translated into English, With Notes, Indexes of New Names, Preparations, &c. &c. ... The Third Edition, Corrected. London: "Printed, by J. W. Galabin, for T. Longman," 1788. 8vo (211 x 125mm). One-page printed announcement of the work dated 16th January 1788 before the title (some light mainly marginal spotting and staining, a few leaves creased). Contemporary calf, the spine with red morocco lettering-piece (joints split, rubbed and scuffed). Originally published in Latin in 1618 under the title Pharmacopoeia Londinensis, the work was the first standard list of medicines and their ingredients in England. The author, a distinguished physician, was elected a fellow of the Royal College of Physicians in 1760 and a fellow of the Royal Society in 1770. In 1771 he was appointed Gresham Professor of Physic at Gresham College, a position he held until his death. See DNB. cf. Garrison & Morton 1821 (citing the 1618 edition).
