HAWKER, Peter (1786-1853).  Instructions to Young Sportsmen, on the Choice, Care, and Management of Guns; Hints for Preservation of Game; Directions for Shooting Wildfowl ... With a Concise Abridgment of the Principal Game Laws ... The Second Edition, with Explanatory Plates, Considerably Enlarged and Improved. London: Printed for R. Hunter, 1816. Large 8vo (255 x 160mm). Hand-coloured engraved frontispiece and 4 plates only (of 5, lacking the plate captioned "Poole Canoe ...", occasional light spotting and staining). FINELY BOUND in later red half morocco gilt by Bayntun (Rivière), with 4 hunting motifs stamped in gilt in the compartments of the spine, top edges gilt, others uncut (some very small white spots to the covers). "This work [i.e. Instructions to Young Sportsmen], by which Hawker became widely known, passed through many editions, and was amended and added to from time to time; the eleventh edition is dated 1859" (DNB). With 4 later editions of the same work comprising the fourth (1825, contemporary red half calf gilt), the fifth (1826, contemporary decorated calf, repaired), the eighth (1838, original cloth, repaired) and the eleventh (1859, in contemporary half roan, repaired).
