GOOCH, George Peabody (1873-1968).  Germany ... With an Introduction by The Right Hon. H. A. L. Fisher, M.P. London: Ernest Bevin Limited, 1926. Large 8vo (215 x 140mm). Half title (a few marginal spots mainly towards the end). Original turquoise cloth, spine lettered in gilt (spine faded, without the dust-jacket). FIRST EDITION, second impression, SIGNED "Anthony Eden November 1926" in pencil on the front free endpaper. ANNOTATED AND HIGHLIGHTED IN PENCIL BY ANTHONY EDEN THROUGHOUT. For example, on p.122, Eden writes: "Note the fear of Asiatic Russia that runs through all this -"; on p.124 (commenting on atrocities at the Battle of Dinant, August 1914): "I myself had the [illegible words] of making a list of the names of women & children murdered by machine gun fire at Dinant - I have it still"; on p.197: "If you eliminate the personal note, it all becomes machinery"; on p.292 (in response to the author's vocabulary): "What is a parasite, Mr Gooch?"; and on p.308 (commenting on the printed line 'we may hazard the opinion that Germany retains her position as the best educated people in Europe'): "Mr Gooch's English might perhaps benefit!". The book is the second volume in The Modern World. A Survey of Historical Forces series. With Arnold J. Toynbee's Turkey (London, 1926, 8vo, cloth, SIGNED BY EDEN in pencil on front free endpaper, with his sparse annotation and highlighting) and H. St. J. B. Horsby's Arabia (London, 1930, 8vo, cloth), both books from the same series. Provenance: Anthony Eden (all three books with his old armorial bookplate). (3)
