GOLDEN COCKEREL PRESS - E. Powys MATHERS (1892-1939). Procreant Hymn. Waltham St. Lawrence: The Golden Cockerel Press, 6th February 1926. Large 8vo (245 x 155mm). 5 engraved plates by Eric Gill, publisher's woodcut ornament at the foot of the limitation leaf. Original cream buckram, the spine lettered in gilt, top edges gilt, others uncut (without the scarce dust-jacket). Provenance: Anthony Eden, 1st Earl of Avon (modern armorial bookplate loosely-inserted). A FINE COPY OF THE FIRST EDITION, NUMBER 42 OF 175 COPIES. Loosely-inserted is a printed note from the publisher stating: "Subscribers may be interested to know that three alternative designs have been engraved for this book and may be obtained separately from the artist ..." These illustrations were considered too risqué for inclusion in the printed book. Chanticleer 37; Franklin pp.329-30; Gill 277; Ransom Private Presses and their Books p.297.
