[MAURICE, Thomas (1754-1824)].  The History of Hindostan; as Connected with the History of the Other great Empires of Asia. London: Printed by W. Bulmer and Co., for the Author; and Sold by R. Faulder [Vol. II:] Printed, by H. L. Galabin, for the Author; and Sold by T. Gardiner 1798. 2 volumes, 4to (265 x 210mm). 19 engraved plates, one folding, one double page (short tear without loss to folding plate, plate V bound out of sequence in vol. one, many leaves lightly browned, occasional light mainly marginal spotting and staining). Contemporary marbled calf (rather worn, upper cover of vol. II detached, joints split, rubbed and scuffed). Provenance: John William Bridges (armorial bookplate and signature dated 1809 on front free endpapers). FIRST EDITION, but a baffling set. Volume one contains 9 plates correctly numbered from I - IX; volume II contains 10 plates comprising plate numbered VIII inserted as a frontispiece, an unnumbered folding plate captioned "The Twenty -Eight Hindoo Lunar Mansions", then plates numbered II, III, IV, [without plates numbered V, VI and VII], VIII (a duplicate of the frontispiece), IX and a further unnumbered plate captioned "The Calci, or Tenth Avatar". Brunet III, 326; Cox I, 306. With another set of the same work in 2 vols., very defective, but including the folding coloured map of Hindostan. Only three of the four volumes present are included in the first illustration. The lot, for obvious reasons, is sold not subject to return. (4)
