Cadell, 1773. 3 volumes, 4to (297 x 235mm). 45 engraved plates, maps and charts, many folding, (only, [?]of 52 [see note], "A Chart of the Straights [sic] of Magellan" cropped at upper engraved frame, one plate torn without loss, occasional light mainly marginal spotting and staining). Contemporary speckled calf gilt, spines gilt with red morocco lettering-pieces (rebacked some time ago, some rubbing and scuffing). Provenance: pencil annotation to the rear endpapers of vols. II and III. Second edition of this account of Cook's first voyage. This set contains the "Directions for Placing the Cuts and Charts" which is sometimes lacking. The list is inconsistent, sometimes listing 2 or 3 plates or maps, which are bound separately, as one. Missing from the second vol. of this set are plate No. 1 facing p. 55, plate No. 8 facing p. 185, plate No. 5 facing page p. 234, plate No. 6 facing page 252, plate No. 7 facing page 265, plate No. 17 facing page 318 and plate No. 18 facing page 341.
