Half title (lacks advertisements, occasional light staining). Original cloth, spine lettered and ruled in gilt (joints frayed, corners a little bumped). FIRST ENGLISH TRADE EDITION. Tarr A5.4. The work was first serialised in Fraser’s Magazine between November 1833 and August 1834. Following a privately-printed edition and two printings in America – where Carlyle was hugely influential – this first English trade edition appeared in 1838. With [Charles Dickens and Edward Caswall’s] Sketches of Young Ladies, Young Gentlemen, and Young Couples (London, Chapman and Hall, 1843, 18 plates by “Phiz”, original decorated cloth gilt).
