A PAIR OF 19TH CENTURY CARVED OAK ECCLESIASTICAL ARMCHAIRS (2)

With relief carved backs one depicting Judgement Day the other the Trial of Christ, with embossed leather covered seat backs and one seat covered, on X-frame supports, 74cm wide; 68cm deep; 183cm high

Footnote
A comparable pair of high back chairs at Dunster Castle incorporate earlier Flemish carvings, dating from circa 1600 and depict scenes from the Passion.

Condition report: 

The top crests area loose. Frames pretty sturdy, finials to arms  a little loose. One arm has been resecured and the other a little loose. 

The one with re-covered seat but retaining the leather covered back pad. The other missing this back pad and the supporting rail. Wear and loss to the leather. 

Some shrinkage to timber, general chips and losses to some of the extremities and frame,, wear and rubbing commensurate with use and age. 

The lion crests very worn and rubbed with losses to the edges. 

No obvious signs of worm.
