THE BRONTE SISTERS - Michael FFOLKES (1925-88, pseudonym, illustrator, styled, as usual, "ffolkes"). The original pen, ink and watercolour front cover design for the September 29th, 1962, issue of "Punch" which was dedicated to the Brontë sisters, depicting Charlotte, Emily and Anne busily writing in the open air, with Haworth Rectory in the background, while sheets of written manuscript are blown away in the wind, with an official hatted figure (possibly that of their father), disapprovingly collecting pages on the end of a pointed stick, signed "f. ffolkes" [i.e. in the lower case, as usual] in the top right corner, marked up in pencil for printing, mounted on board, dimensions of image 274 x 226mm. The artist, born Brian Davis, studied at St Martin's School of Art and the Chelsea School of Art. In addition to contributing to many magazines as a cartoonist, he also illustrated children's books, most notably those of Roald Dahl.
