Bidding ended. Lot has been sold.

ARDIZZONE, Edward (1900-79) & Elisabeth FRINK (1930-93).  An autograph letter from each, sold together: first, a one-page autograph letter by Edward Ardizzone, on paper with printed heading 'Edward Ardizzone, 130 Elgin Avenue, London W9', dated '2/1/61', stating, "Dear Mr Hughes, I am sorry to hear of your loss. I hope you will be able to make it up in time. Yours sincerely, Edward Ardizzone." The letter is notable for a prominent ORIGINAL DRAWING by Edward Ardizzone incorporating a large initial "D" [of "Dear"], with what is almost certainly a self-portrait of the artist holding an umbrella, looking down at a newspaper salesman with a billboard which reads "Great Floods West Country"; and, second, a two-page autograph letter by ELISABETH FRINK on paper blind-stamped "Elisabeth Frink" at the head, with her printed address, [undated], stating, "Dear Elaine Moss, Thank you very much for your letter. It is always marvellous to actually hear from people that they like something you have done. We went to Equus when it first was put on, it is a marvellous play. I met Peter Shaffer at the time he was writing it, as he thought then that I might do the sets. I am having an exhibition in November at Waddington Galleries so I hope that you will come and see my new work - Yours sincerely, Elisabeth Frink." Provenance: Elaine Moss (1924-2020). Elaine Moss was a teacher, broadcaster, journalist and author whose lifetime was dedicated to promoting the importance of children's reading and literature. Amongst many other accomplishments, she initiated the Children's Books of the Year exhibitions at the National Book League which ran from 1970 to 1979 and, in 1976, received the prestigious Eleanor Farjeon Award, given for distinguished service to the world of British children's books. Please see lot 634 which shares this lot's provenance. (2)
