ALBUMS - An album on c.100 leaves, part commonplace book with poetic quotations and lists of "favourite qualities" at the beginning (filled in), but containing, inter alia, many original drawings, including a number of women smoking cigarettes (unusual for the period) and some of equestrian interest, coloured cards, some with a Christmas theme, original watercolour portraits and views, an early photographed portrait of Tennyson, and a clipped signature of William Gladstone, many leaves blank, contained in an attractive contemporary album of straight-grained black morocco with gilt borders, gilt edges, marbled endpapers, clasp (lacking key), 4to (225 x 190mm), late 19th-century. With another similar diary and commonplace book, with very varied contents, including original watercolours, drawings and lithographs, in a very fine burgundy morocco album, signed on the front free endpaper "E. G. Alison, Woodfield, June 30, 1830" (née Tytler, 1799-1874, wife to the historian Sir Archibald Alison, Bart. (1792-1867). (2)
