The Chameleon; or, Conversations on Every-Day Subjects, in French and English, For Young Persons. By F. M. London: John Souter, [c.1840]. Small square 8vo (133 x105mm). Engraved frontispiece, parallel text in French on versos and in English on rectos of each leaf, one-page of publisher's advertisement at the end (occasional light spotting and staining). Original red pictorial cloth gilt, yellow endpapers (black ink stain to upper cover, some other small ink stains, lightly rubbed). Provenance: "Full of French errors, C.W.B." (old pencil inscription on title). The author is unknown. Not in Muir. With 4 other children's and illustrated books including Nursery Rhymes. A Picture Book for Children (London, [n.d.], 4to, 16 chromolithographed plates, with numerous chromolithographed cut-outs and cards pasted onto the blank pages (stained and spotted), "Album Francais" [Title in manuscript] ([No place, n.d.], 4to, containing 52 fine chromolithographed plates of seemingly unrelated portraits and narrative scenes, attractively-bound in contemporary straight-grained burgundy morocco gilt (scratched and scuffed) and Robert Burn's Tam O' Shanter. A Tale in Verse (London, 1895, 4to, coloured illustrations and decorations by George Cruikshank, original coloured pictorial boards). Provenance: The Property of the late Frank Graham (1913-2006), and thence by descent.
