BICKHAM, George (d.1769). The British Monarchy: Or, a New Chorographical Description of all the Dominions Subject to the King of Great Britain. Comprehending The British Isles, The Electoral States, The American Colonies, The African and Indian Settlements. [London:] G. Bickham, October 1st, 1747-48. Folio (205 x 180mm). Additional engraved title with allegorical figure of Britannia, engraved throughout, 46 engraved bird's-eye-views with figural and landscape foregrounds, engraved illustrations and decorations, tables (engraved title repaired at fore-edge, folding map laid down, map of Devonshire lacking and supplied in crude modern facsimile, some tears and repairs, mostly on versos). Modern burgundy leather by John Joyce and Son, Gateshead, slip case. Provenance: The Property of the late Frank Graham (1913-2006, armorial panel on upper cover), and thence by descent; James [?]Godfrey (old signature at head of engraved title); modern pencil inscription on the blank verso of a preliminary leaf stating, "This edition published 1748. Not in alphabetical order." The concluding section, headed "A Short Description of the American Colonies" and dated 1747, includes descriptions and illustrations of the indigenous inhabitants of, inter alia, New England, New York, New Jersey, Pensilvania [sic], Maryland, Virginia, Carolina and Georgia.
