Half title, coloured frontispiece, illustration on title, and 26 full-page coloured illustrations by Beatrix Potter (many leaves frayed with slight loss, a few tears, frontispiece and title secured with a single strip of adhesive tape). Original paper boards lettered in white with coloured pictorial label by Beatrix Potter mounted on the upper cover, pictorial endpapers (stain to upper cover affecting label, top upper corners rubbed, inner hinges weak, some wear to endpapers). Provenance: "Claire Ferguson's Book. Given her by her Uncle Horace and Aunt Ethel at Xmas, 1903" (inscription on front free endpaper). FIRST EDITION. Linder p.423; Muir English Children's Books p.163 (erroneously stating that this title did not have a frontispiece); Quinby 5. With the same author's The Tale of Mr Tod (London, 1912, illustrations, some full-page and coloured (lacks frontispiece), original boards, FIRST EDITION). (2)
