Coloured pictorial title, illustrations and 19 coloured plates by W. W. Denslow only (of 24, title detached and torn without significant loss, plates detached and torn or frayed with loss, one repaired on verso with adhesive tape, some text leaves detached). Original red and green pictorial cloth (some staining, spine discoloured, joints splitting). Provenance: early inscriptions on first blank; some pencil annotation. FIRST EDITION, with the following issue points: single rule border around the advertisements on [p.2]; copyright leaf, dated 1899, on the verso of introduction [i.e. verso of title blank]; the first line of p. 14 with 'low wail on the wind'; p.81 with 'pieces' spelt correctly; the plate facing p.34 in the first state with two marks on the 'forehead' of the moon; the plate facing p. 92 in the second state without red shading on the horizon; the imprint printed in red at the foot of the spine. With the same author's The Marvelous Land of Oz ([Chicago, n.d.], illustrations and coloured plates, original coloured pictorial cloth, lacks title and first few leaves, very defective).
