London: John Murray, 1872. 2 volumes, 8vo (215 x 135mm). Half titles, frontispieces, 6 plates, maps, illustrations and diagrams (one leaf detached in vol. one). Attractively bound in contemporary green half morocco gilt (rubbed). Provenance: S. D. Titmas, Charterhouse 1874 (signatures on front free endpapers). Samuel David Titmas (1848-94), who taught science at Charterhouse, was also an Anglican clergyman and a Fellow of the Linnaean Society. cf. Norman 1398; PMM 344: "... Lyell had established once and for all [in Principles of Geology] the uniformitarian theory of geology, which dispensed with the notion of supernatural intervention"; Dibner 96 (all references citing the first edition of 1830-33).
