According to the vendor, their great great aunt
Janet Ross (née Duff-Gordon) lived in Poggio Gherado in Settignano just outside
Florence until her death in 1927 having arrived there in 1867 from Egypt. She
was a well known hostess in Florence and received Dicky Doyle and it is believed that as a thank
you he did this sketch of the South gates to the property adding some bucolic
details.
