Provenance: Christie's Sale 18370 Russian Art Lot 262
Lot Note: The present kovsh belongs to a number of the so-called 'restored' kovshi made in the second half of the eighteenth century, when descendants of the recipients were allowed to reproduce their parents' lost or damaged Imperial gifts. Therefore, such kovshi often bear 18th century silversmith makers' marks with the 17th century presentation inscription, which were engraved on the original presented kovshi.
The above shows how such presentation kovshi were regarded as very important and highly valuable family relics. A number of similar kovshi is currently in the collection of the State Historical Museum, Moscow (M. Postnikova-Loseva, Russkie Serebrianie i Zolotie Kovshi, Moscow, 1953, pl. 23-24).
Condition Report; The attribution of mark of Ivan Frolov have been taken from the description as provided by a leading London auction house. A piece is missing from the finial on the opposite side from the handle, otherwise minor wear to the gilding and to the high points, there are signs of repair below the marks. At this point an oval section has been let in and then subsequently engraved over and gilded to disguise the added section. The soldered section below the marks partly distorts the clarity of the lower part of the marks
