Theses mounts are based on the gilt-bronze examples which are seen on an impressive armoire by Andre-Charles Boulle in the Wallace Collection (F62), circa 1700. Boulle’s decorative schemes were inspired by mythological stories from Ovid’s Metamorphoses, and apparently Boulle owned various drawings by Raphael illustrating these tales, until destroyed in a workshop fire.
