DAISY BORNE (BRITISH 1906-1998): ‘RENAISSANCE’ BRONZE FIGURAL GROUP OF A FEMALE NUDE STANDING OVER A MAN

On an oblong base stamped with the Foundry mark ‘G. VIGNOLI FIRENZE’, 54cm high

Estimate: £800 - £1,200
Hammer price: £1,000
Bidding ended. Lot has been sold.

PROVENANCE:

Apparently acquired by the vendor from a Phillips’ Auction, probably in 1992.

The example sold at auction is described in the catalogue with a label to the underside detailing ‘R.A. Exhibition 1932, No. 1578’. This appears to be subsequently lost over time. Daisy Borne is know to have exhibited at the Royal Academy from 1932 to 1962 quite regularly, as well as 78 various works at the Society of Woman Artists from 1933 to 1971, finally becoming a full member of that society in 1952. In 1987 the Fine Art Society hosted a two-woman show of Borne and Joyce Bidder’s work.

Condition report:

The foundry mark is rubbed but just possible to discern ‘G.VIGNOLI FIRENZE’.

The underside covering the base is missing.

General scuffs, marks and rubbing to the patina notably to the base.
