Footnote
This work is a study for Dadd's entry for the competition in 1843 to decorate the new Palace of Westminster. The competition for fresco designs illustrating various scenes from British history was about to close when Dadd arrived home from his trip to the Middle East in April of that year. He decided that the subject of his entry should only be loosely based on history and chose the patriotic myth of St George After the Death of the Dragon.
