Canvas relined; traces of craquelure to paint surface, scratch to surface above gentleman's head, upper right; further small abrasion off the border, upper centre; traces of slightly discoloured varnish; ultraviolet reveals traces of inhaling to craquelure, upper right but the varnish prevents a conclusive reading.
