Panel is generally sound; small surface crack to panel, upper left; paint surface appears thin in some areas, particularly in the foreground, lower centre; discoloured overpainting in the sky visible to the naked eye; ultraviolet reveals extensive retouching throughout the sky, some further to the standing figure, lower left.
