The original composition on which the present work is based was held in the Appleton Museum of Art, affiliated to Florida University. It was sold in 1868 to Wallis & Co, a dealership based in London before re-emerging in St. Louis in the 1920s. A copy similar to the present work is held in the Shrewsbury Museum and Art Gallery.

Original canvas. Craquelure pattern to paint surface, stable; traces of horizontal stretcher bar; traces of a discoloured varnish; traces of fine infilling to craquelure upper right and left to background, visible to the naked eye, no further sign of retouching. Held in an ornate plaster gilt frame with some chips to gilt work.
