Condition report
Gentleman - relined canvas; discoloured varnish to paint surface and frame abrasions to the borders; further scattered minor surface abrasions; paint shrinkage to the dark pigments in the coat; ultraviolet reveals some retouching to the background and sitter's jaw but the varnish prevents a conclusive reading.
Lady - relined canvas. surface dirt and discoloured varnish, traces of craquelure around the sitters head. Ultraviolet reveals traces of retouching to the sitter's forehead and to the background, upper right.
