AFTER JEAN-BAPTISTE PIGALLE (1714-1785): A BRONZE FIGURE OF A SEATED HERMES OR MERCURY, AFTER THE ANTIQUE

Pigalle presented this marble version of Mercury Lacing His Sandals in 1742 to the French Academy and to great acclaim. It is probably one of his most famous works, now in the Louvre museum. On the strength of this tremendous success, a large scale version of this model and its pendant, a Venus, was gifted by royal command to Frederick the Great.

Condition report: 

The Rosso Levanto base with various small edge chips, fissures and repairs. See images. These are on a vary small level as to be expected with age and use. The figure is a little loose on the base, which needs resecuring. 

The hands are holding or tying the back of the sandel. See extra image. 

Otherwise, general inevitable rubbed patina commensurate with wear, use and age. Dirt and dust.
