Provenance: 

Sotheby’s London, 22 February 1999, lot 417. 

The original marble is attributed to the Greek sculptor Praxiteles, and was excavated by Gavin Hamilton in 1792 from a property just outside Gabii in Rome, owned by Prince Borghese. The sculpture was subsequently sold to Napoleon and now in the Louvre. It was widely copied in the 19th Century.
