LeQuesne was born and worked in Paris, where he studied under James Pradier. He won numerous prizes throughout his career, including the Prix de Rome in 1843, 1844, and 1851. He also won a medal in the Paris 1855 Exposition Universelle and, during the same year, was elected to become a knight of the Légion d'Honneur. Most of his work was cast by the leading Parisian foundry Susse Frères in varying sizes. This is a particularly large and impressive example.
