Paris: Chez J. Cl. Jombert, Musier and Ch. J. Panckoucke, 1763. 2 volumes, 4to (249 x 190mm). Half title, woodcut ornaments on titles, 38 folding engraved plates, tables (some mainly light and marginal spotting and staining). Contemporary mottled calf, spines gilt in compartments with red morocco lettering-pieces, green silk markers, red edges (extremities rubbed and scuffed, joints of vol. II splitting). Provenance: From the Collection of Peter and Margarethe Braune; Stonyhurst College (labels dated 1810 on front pastedowns and on titles); old illegible (partly erased) stamped monograms at foot of titles; "From the books of E. N. da C. Andrade, Fellow of the Royal Society" (modern labels). FIRST EDITION of this "... ouvrage le plus estimé que l' on ait sur cet art" (Brunet).
