Footnote
The present work forms part of a series of paintings commissioned for the 1958, Oscar-nominated film, The Horse's Mouth, directed by Ronald Neame.  The film is based on a novel of the same name by Anglo-Irish writer Joyce Cary and is the third in a trilogy of works revolving around the life of passionate but disaffected artist Gulley Jimson, played in the film by Alec Guinness.  Bratby considered this series of paintings to be some of his best work.  Guinness took inspiration from Bratby when preparing for the role for which he won best actor at the Venice Film Festival in 1958.

The present lot will be exhibited at Cromwell Place SW7 2JE on 5th & 6th November; please follow the link below for further details
