Footnote
Madeleine Dowden lived at 2 The Ridgeway, Gunnersbury, London and in the late 1950's attended evening art classes in Ealing. Frank Auerbach was her art teacher. It is understood that he annotated her life drawing studies with his own small sketches to help demonstrate improvements to her work. This folio of drawings date from 1958 and 1959, with some of the works dated in pencil. Dowden was heavily pregnant for part of this period and eventually Auerbach asked her to leave the evening art classes due to her repeatedly fainting.
Please note we cannot be absolutely certain that the sketch annotations are by Auerbach but, given the information above provided by the Dowden family, we believe they are most likely by his hand.
