FootnoteAn essay by Ken Howard, signed and dated 19 November 1974, attached the reverse of the canvas includes the following description of the present work:
'The four man patrol is negotiating a very difficult corner, giving each other all round cover. The small figure, right background, is the last man of the patrol and he always has to walk backwards giving cover to the rear, a most difficult and tiring job. High in the sky is a helicopter. The drone of the helicopter is a very evocative Belfast sound. I have used the telegraph wires and spiky scaffolding to give a heightened feeling of the tension on such a patrol.'
