Footnote
Munnings utilised numerous small-scale canvases for oil sketches in the period between the wars. The scene, with its sweeping drive and church steeple in the distance, is very reminiscent of his East Anglian landscapes, as is the confident, deft and freely applied brushwork of the red, ochre and brown palette. The canvas bears the stamp of John Bryce Smith of Hampstead Road, London, a prominent canvas-maker of the day who supplied artists including, Nevinson, Sickert and Augustus John.
