The Régence design is named after the famous Parisian Café de la Régence, where reputedly chess players like Voltaire, Rousseau, Stamma and Philidor, Ben Franklin, Robespierre, Napoleon, Harrwitz and Morphy enjoyed the game. These Régence playing sets share a number of characteristics including petal shaped crowns for the kings, the queens and bishops are similar in form, functional vase shape and baluster stems.
