The Haida carved many trade goods and souvenirs from argillite (carbonaceous shale) intended for sale to outsiders using mythical creatures, like those found in totem poles or mortuary posts, for decoration. Many were collected by sailors or adventurers in the 19th Century.
Condition report:
The mouth piece end of the pipe has been broken and damaged with some small fragments missing. The parts have been repaired but further restoration is required. Otherwise, general rubbing and scuffs commensurate with use and age.
