This composition is after the Roman marble model, circa 2nd Century AD, which in turn is inspired by an Greek Hellenistic version, circa 200 BC. Also, known as the Uffizi Venus or Aphrodite of Doidalses, the marble version was restored in 1704, when an engraving records a seashell supporting the goddess. Reductions were sold in 18th Century Rome by Neo-Classical founders such as Giacomo Zoffoli and Francesco Righetti. See the Metropolitian Museum, Accession Number 32.100.184
