Landseer was commissioned to paint Georgiana, Duchess of Bedford in 1823. This led to a close association and eventually an affair. A large number of pen and ink sketches emanated from this period and the present work appears to be part of this series.

Other than one small, faint crease to background, upper centre the sheet is sound, Colours are strong, not faded; framed an under glass, unexamined out of frame.
