Canvas is relined. Paint surface is generally sound, with a heavy varnish and scattered surface craquelure consistent with a work of this age. Ultraviolet reveals extensive but finely executed infilling to craquelure to the background, violin, scroll, casket, and statuette; areas of opaque varnish prevent further examination.
