Footnote
The sitter, Alice Edwards, lived in East London and was a professional model who often sat for students at The Slade in the 1920s. During this period Gertler used Edwards, one of his favourite models, for a series of portraits. In her, Gertler saw 'all the charm of young girlhood' and attempted to capture this in up to a dozen works, most notably his 'Young Girlhood' series.
Examples of Edwards appearing in Gertler's work include, Young Girl No. 2, now in the collection of The Ashmolean Museum, Oxford (Accession No. WA1959.54.2), After Bathing, in the collection of Manchester City Art Gallery (Accession No. 1924.22), and in Coster Family on Hampstead Heath, now in the Tel Aviv Museum of Modern Art.
Condition report
Minor abrasions to the edges of the sheet; colour variation to the left and lower borders, probably due to a previous mount. Otherwise good condition throughout; framed and under glass, unexamined out of frame.
