Footnote
This painting was exhibited at Ihlee’s one man show at the Chenil Gallery in 1926 with a price tag of £60. It features landscape near Collioure in the south of France where Ihlee lived between 1922 and 1940. The number on the back, '2508', indicates that it was the 8th painting he produced in 1925. Ihlee had been a brilliant student at the Slade where his contemporaries included Mark Gertler and Stanley Spencer. He had three successful one man shows in London before his French exile, prompted in part by a marital break-up. He is the subject of a new book called Rudolph Ihlee: The Road to Collioure published by Lund Humphries and written by James Trollope whom we thank for the information on this lot.
Condition report
A little craquelure in places.
Otherwise appears in generally good original condition.
We do not know if it is the original frame. The frame does appear to be a fraction too large for the picture.
