Second Quarter 19th Century
Estimate: | £300 - £500 |
Refreshed decoration, of flared and elongated square form, each mounted with the caduceus of Mercury, raised on paw feet, both with the remains of an impressed foil label, indistintly marked ‘MEDAILLED D’ OR ACCORDEE .. RUE MARTEL NO. 15’, 22cm wide; 41.5cm high
The manufacturer’s labels to the undersides of these vases is probably the same as that found on a series of pedestal tables made in Paris by the Manufacture de vernis sur metaux de la rue Martel. These date from the early 19th Century and for a good example see Sotheby’s Paris, Important French Furniture & Sculpture, 10 November 2009, lot 258.
Condition report:
In good order. Wear and oxidization as to be expected and noticeable to the interiors; lacking liners. Various old chips and knocks to the painted work though in areas, notably the edges of the rims and further exposed areas. Paint refreshed at some point.
