A FINE AND RARE EDWARDIAN QUARTER CHIMING AND STRIKING LONGCASE CLOCK WITH WEDGWOOD DIAL

The substantial case with swan-neck pediment, above moulded cornice and arched bevelled glazed door, flanked by a column to each side, the trunk with triple-panelled bevelled glazed door, with visible silvered beat scale, on stepped plinth and swept bracket feet; the substantial 16 ¼ in. arched dial with silvered surround, the Jasper-ware ceramic dial plate with central silver plated chapter ring, and dished centre, surrounded by five subsidiaries:  Chime/Silent; Seconds; Chime on 8 bells/Chime on 4 gongs/ Chime on 4 bells; Barometric pressure; Thermometer, the substantial three train movement with maintaining power and deadbeat escapement with beat regulation to the crutch,  four screwed pillars, all wheelwork of six crossings and screwed to their arbour mounts, chiming on a carillon of eight bells and on four blued steel gongs on the backboard, the hours on a blued steel gong, the pendulum suspended from the backboard

S. Smith & Son were prominent Twentieth Century London jewellers, silvermiths, watch and clockmakers. They are especially known for their very fine Tourbillon watches.  Founded in 1851 by Samuel Smith, by 1898 they were Watchmakers to the Admiralty, winning awards for their quality work.

The quality (and weight) of this movement is outstanding.  The use of a such a large ceramic dial is exceptionally rare.
