Footnote
The present work was painted by Tuke during his visit to Venice in May 1899 when he stayed with Horatio Brown at the Casa Torresella on the Zattere. His diary entry for 29th May states, 'A good grey day and did some Trabacoli (wood boats). Tuke returned to England in June and July his gallery at Grove Place, Falmouth opened, a joint venture with fellow artists William Ayerst Ingram and John Herbert Downing. The Falmouth packet reviewed the exhibition and commented specifically on the present work, 'Mr Tuke has broken fresh ground, so to speak. He seems to revel in the queer-shaped boats and sails with various designs on the later.'
