Condition report
The canvas has been relined; some scuffing to the the varnish, upper right; traces of old craquelure, particularly around the sitter's face; some minor frame abrasions visible when unframed, otherwise paint surface is generally clean with an even varnish. Ultraviolet light reveals some light strengthening to the curls of the wig, to the outline of sitter's left eye; general overpainting to sash, some infilling to craquelure in the background, particularly upper left and middle left as well as to armour, lower right. Held in a plaster gilt frame with crack to slip, lower left and some old marks and scratches.
